INKA Wall
Ingapirca In the province of Cañar, at an altitude of 10233 feet above sea level, and a distance of 80 kms (55 miels) from Cuenca, is found the biggest archaeological complex of Ecuador nowadays. Here we can find a very well preserved INKA solar temple often referred to as The Castle, an inner city for the royal family, an outer city for the regular inkas baptized as La Condamine, a very will displayed set of storage rooms in front of the main Cancha or plaza forstoring weapons and food for the conquest of the north and right next, connecting is PILALOMA, remains of a Cañari city including a set of storage silos that became part of complex.
Pilaloma dates back maybe 2000 years, but the Inka complex was built only 475 years. The complete visit includes a 2 mile walk visiting a site called Inka baths, some giant statues of Tortoises and two very mysterious formations in the rock, one is called Inka Face and the other is a very unusual circle inside the rock that called the attention of Humboldt and called it intihuaico and Inkachungana.
The ruins were first described in the times of the French geodesic mission (1736 – 1744), we found traces in all the books of famous travelers and explores throughout the 18th century.
The complex was built by Tupac Yupanki and definitely finished by Huaina Capac and certainly occupied by Atahualpa last king of the Inkas before his killing in Cajamarca in 1532. This is the main Inka construction in Ecuador, but not the only one, we can also find Los Molinos and Pumapungo in Cuenca city, traces all over Cañar province, San Agustin near the Cotopaxi National Park and the latest Inka construction is called the Atahualpa birth palace in Caranqui, right north of Otavalo. ALL this sites can be visited during our regular programs.
