Hi Yossi – we returned home Wednesday and had a great trip both in Ecuador and Peru. Really fantastic. I have a wonderful photo of us all at Puerto Lago and I will try to attach it here. I received the recipe and hope to try it, but some of the ingredients need translation. I tried the computer for translation and got some very funny results. Thank you for everything you did to make our stay in Quito, interesting, fun, and safe! We had a wonderful time in Otavalo, Cotacachi, and Quito.

What I remember with great pleasure about our visit to Equador is the special warmth and welcoming spirit of the people we met, and the spectacular beauty of the mountain countryside in the area around Otavalo with its fields of many different greens, and golden plots of wheat and barley, laid out in sections of color like abstract paintings wrapped around the mountain.
Of course, I never will forget your outstanding driving on the so difficult alternative,(though we had NO ALTERNATIVE) road to Quito!

Our guide, Francisco Jarrin, proved exquisitely sensitive to both our interests and the vagaries of Ecuadorian politics. During the indigenous strike in March 2006 he not only got us safely back to Quito from Otovalo under extremely difficult conditions, but kept us happy throughout our stay. Our plans to explore south of Quito had to be deferred but our time in Otovalo and Quito was thoroughly enjoyable.

It is strange to be home and back in the fray. We all had such a great time in Ecuador. It was such fun and a dream come true to have climbed volcanoes, gone canoeing down the Amazon and explored Darwin's Galapagos islands. We had to struggle with Spanish to get around but that was also a challenge and interesting. The weather in Sydney has been very warm and has been a real readjustment for me! Here are a few photos

Nice to hear from you. I have been thinking a lot about Ecuador and telling many of the stories I collected there. I'm not sure if I want to return to the hummingbird forest as a volunteer, but I'd certainly like to visit Ecuador again. And the synagogue in Quito was especially beautiful . Next time, I'll have to be there for a Shabbat.

During our recent visit to Ecuador, we received exemplary service from Flash Travel. Senor Jarrin is a highly qualified guide with a PhD in Biology, who provided us with an outstanding overview of the country.
From him we learned much about the culture of the native people, the flora and
fauna of the various ecological zones, and the translation of Renaissance
and Baroque Art into the colonial religious art of Ecuador. We were also afforded ample time for shopping, including visits to the Indian market and Chordeleg, a village famous for jewelry. Senor Jarrin is a cautious driver, and shows a thorough knowledge of Ecuadorian roads.
We also received outstanding logistic services from Alexandra Barragan.
Our visit to Ecuador included a Galapagos cruise, booked through a separate company. This fact notwithstanding, Senorita Barragan ensured that all our reservations were in order. When our airline tickets were not delivered, she tracked them down for us, obtained our boarding passes, and escorted us to the airport
security. Following our return from the Galapagos, she again met us to deliver paperwork for our confirmed return flights. This was considerably more service than we anticipated.
We would recommend Flash Travel to anyone planning to visit Ecuador. Due to the extent of their contacts within the country, and their ability to deal with difficulties, we feel that it is wiser to book with them then through an agent in your home country.

Most of the tour operators in the most recent edition of Ecuador no longer seem to exist. We made our flight arrangements before doing our research, and were worried that we wouldn't be able to do and see everything we wanted to after we read the book. We found a relatively new company based in Quito (with offices in Peru as well) that really saved the trip for us in more ways than one. FlashTravel (Francisco and Alexandra) worked exceptionally hard for us to connect with a great ship for the Galapagos tour and then for a Rainforest tour while allowing enough time to see some of the rest of the mainland. They saved us several hundred dollars in the process from what other operators were quoting us. They met us at the airport when we arrived and gave us much personal - and extremely appreciated - service throughout our stay earlier this month (July 2003). When we were unable to leave the Rainforest at the scheduled time (due to rain which prevented the planes from landing) they made last minute adjustments and drove us in their own car for our last two full days in the country. As spectacular as the Galapagos and Rainforest are, those two days will remain the highlight for my husband and I. We experienced events and places few "tourists" ever see as well as visiting those places we had listed from our own research, such as the various villages known for specific handicrafts, etc. We can't say enough about FlashTravel and we sincerely hope you will give them a high rating in the next edition. Thank you very much for booking me on the Samba. I had such a great time. The ship's accommodations were great with air conditioning and private baths. The food on the boat was also very delicious. bei unserem Abschied baten Sie um eine Beurteilung Ihrer Reiseleitung von Quito bis nach Guayaquil. Summa summarum, es hat uns sehr gut gefallen, und jetzt zu Hause schwärmen wir vielen Leuten von unserer Ecuador Rundreise vor.
Im Einzelnen in Bezug auf Sie:
1) Immer sehr pünktlich und ordentlich gekleidet
2) für ecuadorianische Verhältnisse ein ein sehr vorsichtiger Autofahrer. Wir haben uns immer sehr sicher gefühlt.
3) Deutsche Sprachkenntnisse könnten besser sein. Aber da wir ein bißchen Spanisch konnten, sicher viel schlechter als Sie Deutsch, gab es keine Kommunikationsprobleme.
4) Gute Erklärungen zu Land und Leuten, Geographie, Geschichte, Pflanzen. Wir hatten drei sehr angenehme Wanderungen in Großer Höhe.
5) Sie waren Guide und Autofahrer in einer Person, sehr anstrengend. Sie haben beides sehr gut gemeistert.
6) wir waren eine Woche in Ihrem Privatauto unterwegs, rund 1000 km gefahren. Das Auto war zuverlässig und gut. (Der Sicherheitsgurt hinten rechts war nicht benutzbar. Das hat mich ein wenig gestört, auch wenn man sich in Ecuador hinten nicht anzuschnallen braucht.)
7) In Cuenca haben Sie den von Sommer vorgegeben Reiseverlauf geändert, was sehr gut war. Eine zweimalige lange Autofahrt in den Cajas Nationalpark wurde dadurch vermieden. Statt dessen haben wir in der Nähe von Cuenca eine uralte Weberei und Teppichknüpferei besucht und außerdem einen Indianer Markt in ?????, den wir übrigens viel interessanter fanden als den Otavalo, und der viele schöne Fotomotive hergab. Die indianischen Bauern dort waren auch netter als die in Otavalo. Ansonsten haben Sie das vorgegebene Programm gut abgearbeitet.

Inzwischen sind wir schon wieder fast 2 Wochen in München und der Beruf hat uns so sehr beansprucht, dass ich erst jetzt dazugekommen bin, endlich zu schreiben. Wir denken oft und gerne an die 3 wunderschönen Wochen in Ecuador zurück. Hier unser Kurzbericht:

Uns hat die Vielseitigkeit des Landes sehr beeindruckt: Kultur, klerikale und profane Bauwerke und große Märkte in den Städten, im Vergleich zum bunten Marktreiben in den Dörfern, üppige Vegetation und große Artenvielfalt (Flora und Fauna) im Amazonas Regenwaldgebiet, das geschäftige Städtchen Mindo mit vielfältigen Betätigungsmöglichkeiten, die grandiose Bergwelt auf der Allee der Vulkane, die kristallklare Luft auf 5000m Höhe, die einzigartige Tierwelt und wunderschöne Landschaft auf Galapagos, Inkakultur in Ingapirca, die goßen gesellschaftlichen Gegensätze: Hochhäuser in den Großstädten, Lehm-Strohhütten bei der indianischen Landbevölkerung, die tiefe christliche Verwurzelung der Bevölkerung und überall die knallbunten Trachten der Männer und Frauen.
Unsere gesamte Reise war perfekt organisiert und durchgeführt, von der stets pünktlichen Abholung am Flughafen und zu den einzelnen Touren, über die Auswahl der Sehenswürdigkeiten bis zur umsichtigen persönlichen Betreuung, wie zum Beispiel die Versorgung mit Wasser und Lippenbalsam.
Francisco hat einen Großteil zum Gelingen unserer Reise beigetragen, sowohl auf Grund seiner ausgezeichneten Kenntnisse der Geschichte und Kultur des Landes wie auch seines Wissens zu den Naturschönheiten Ecuadors. Er hat sich immer sehr flexibel auf unsere Wünsche und Bedürfnisse eingestellt und uns viele gute Tips zu kulinarischen und sonstigen Spezialitäten des Landes gegeben.
Hierfür nochmals einen ganz herzlichen Dank ; wir werden von den Eindrücken dieser Reise lange zehren können.

Leider hat es von Guayaquil aus mit der Beach nicht geklappt: an dem Tag, an dem wir auf´s Boot wollten, gab es eine Tsunamimeldung aus Chile und deshalb durfte kein Boot rausfahren und der Strand war gesperrt. Wir haben aber trotzdem 2 schöne Tage mit der Familie verbracht.
